Have a fast fashion clothing favorite? Learn how to spot and style pieces to make them look more expensive than they look!
As I am getting older, the lazier I get when it comes to getting dressed.
But I hate going out in pajamas or gym wear, even if it’s just to the grocery store because you just never know who you’re going to meet.
With that said, I’ve been looking for the most best ways to look cute with the least amount of effort possible.
I love dresses because they are economical. But on my last thrift trip, a long black pleated skirt outfit idea entered my mind!
Skirts have never really been on my radar, I’ve always been a pants or dress person, not so much in between.
But the light bouncing off the black definitely made me do a double take.
This skirt was $3 and I can already tell this will be one of my favorite go-to pieces for everyday or special occasions.
With an elastic waist, it adjusted to my skinny frame, and the pleats were so romantic and not like anything I have in my closet.
If you’re a skinny girl looking to add the illusion of curves, love the feminine look of skirts, or just want to try something new, a long black pleated skirt outfit is it!
How to Make Cheaper Clothes Look Expensive
This skirt is polyester fabric and was only $3. But I saw the potential at first glance. What’s the secret? How do you make cheap clothes look expensive?
- Go for black. Black is usually the most forgiving color for fabrics. It is much more difficult to tell apart quality of black fabric just from looking than it is of lighter or brighter colors.
- Be ready to go over pieces ocasionally with a nail scissors, or needle and thread and ocasionally a de-pilling machine..)
- Don’t wear things too tight or fitted. Buy your clothes and get them tailored for pieces you love or pair your basics with your pieces you splurged a little more on.
- Iron/Steam Your Clothes. An effort to get rid of wrinkles in fabric works wonders and instantly uplifts an outfit.
Outfit #1 Off the Shoulder

I love this off the shoulder shirt with the black skirt. Mauve is the color for luxury and it balances perfectly against my darker skin tone.
My shoulders are my favorite accent to show off and with the flare of this skirt, the top silhouette balances perfectly!
I would wear this outfit to a cultured event like an opera, museum exhibition, or orchestra concert.
It has natural romantic vibes that blends perfectly with my feminine style.
Outfit #2 Sheer Elegance

If you’re worried about getting cold, you can switch off the shoulder for a sheer top over a strapless shirt.
I love the nude color of this top, it gives the outfit a pop of color without being loud and flashy. The shirt is flowy, feminine, and delicate.
I would pair this with heels and a metal purse of some sort for glitz and glam.
Outfit # 3 Mix and Match Textures

If you want to go for an all-black outfit, the secret to making your look pop is varying the texture.
Here I have the pleated skirt that catches light in all directions paired with a crop velvet sweater and a buttery smooth leather jacket.
You can pull up the skirt as high or low as you want with the waist band (no belly buttons, please!) and it also gives something for the eye to travel to.
